FAQ
What is counselling, really?
Counselling is a space just for you. A place where you can talk freely, without judgment, and be heard with care and respect. Whether you’re feeling overwhelmed, stuck, curious about yourself, or just unsure where to turn, therapy can help you make sense of things and find a way forward—at your own pace.
Do I need to have a “big problem” to come to therapy?
Not at all.
People come to counselling for all kinds of reasons this can include anxiety, low mood, grief, identity, relationships, life changes, or simply a sense that something doesn’t feel quite right. You don’t need to have it all figured out, and there is no “right” reason to be here. If it’s on your mind or in your heart, it matters.
Is what I share confidential?
Yes, almost always.
Everything you share is treated with care and confidentiality. The only exceptions are if there’s a risk of serious harm to you or someone else, or a legal requirement to disclose something. I’ll explain this clearly when we first meet so you feel safe and informed.
Please have a look at the Therapeutic contract page for more information.

What happens in the first session?
Think of it as a gentle first step.
The first session is a chance to meet, talk about what’s brought you here, and see how it feels to work together. There’s no pressure to tell your whole story right away, this is your space and we’ll move at a pace that feels right for you.
How long will I need therapy?
It’s different for everyone.
Some people come for just a few sessions; others prefer longer-term support. We’ll regularly check in together and make sure your therapy is working for you. You’re never locked in—we go session by session, guided by your needs.
What if I don’t know what to say?
That’s completely okay.
You don’t need to arrive with a plan. It’s very normal to feel unsure or even nervous. I’m here to help you feel at ease, and we’ll work gently from wherever you are. Sometimes just showing up is the most important step.
Do you have experience working with people like me?
I work with people from many different walks of life.
While I may not share your background or lived experience, I offer a space that is respectful, inclusive, and always open-hearted. I stay curious, keep learning, and welcome your feedback if I ever get something wrong. You deserve to feel safe, seen, and supported.
How much does it cost?
Sessions are £60.00 and last 50 minutes.
If cost is a concern, I may have some concession spaces available—please feel free to ask.
How do I book a session?
You can email me at claire@serenitycounsellingservice.co.uk, use the contact form, or call me.
If you’re not sure yet, you’re very welcome to get in touch with any questions. I’ll do my best to help.
I offer a free 20 minute telephone consultation. You are welcome to call me for an informal chat and to ask any questions. To get the best out of counselling, you need to feel comfortable with your therapist, so before making a decision, I am more than happy to talk to you on the phone to see if we can work together. After all, counselling is an investment in you and you deserve to choose someone that suits you…there is no obligation or pressure to book an appointment.
You don’t have to have it all figured out to move forward
